Oz School
Poetry Through Photography - Santa Fe, New Mexico

The OZ School is a privately run after-school program proving for approximately 40 students from six different elementary schools in the Santa Fe area. The director of the school, Karen Turner, emphasizes the arts as a means for kids to express themselves outside of the classroom. Student artwork from OZ has won a number of local awards and a book, A Raven’s Tale, was recently published of their paintings.

In the autumn of 2003 Gregory Gutin was invited to facilitate a Poetry Through Photography project at the school. In line with the Ritual Sunlight commitment towards cross-cultural exchange, the project was introduced to the students with a viewing of works done by Tibetan refugee students at Tibetan Homes School in India. Over the next three months OZ students looked at their lives both through photography and writing. Similar to the project at Tibetan Homes School, though less structured, students were able to explore their everyday relationships from a different perspective using images and words.

OZ School now has an on-going digital photography program for students, facilitated by Gregory Gutin.
