Artist’s Statement
I’ve been shooting photographs ever since I stepped outside
my own country in the summer of 1984 when I first traveled to Europe.
I rarely take pictures in the U.S., saving my film for places less
familiar to me where I can explore my ever-expanding relationship
to the planet away from home. It seems difficult for me to gain
a certain perspective when I’m inside of what’s more
familiar to me. Ironically, I often feel more at home in foreign
places, especially in less developed countries. The simple attitude,
the decaying architecture, the play of children and the general
flow of life all seem more natural. Inside of this flow I often
become inspired to capture moments on film, perhaps to remind myself
later of that feeling or to offer a piece of the experience with
my community. I’m most intrigued by people’s relationship
to each other and their environment. I try to reflect this through
my pictures in a timeless way so as to remove it from our everyday
preconceptions of “how things are”. At the same time,
it’s very important for me to remain true to the moment without
altering or forcing anything within the environment that I’m
in. Underlying all of my work is the juxtaposition of the dreamtime
against everyday survival, and I’ve come to discover that
the line between them is very thin.
